Shane Cerone, MHA
Shane brings 25+ years of leadership experience in multiple environments including nationally-renowned academic medical centers and community health systems. He began his career at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, one of the nation’s leading quaternary care centers and public research institutions. While at UIHC, Shane held responsibilities for operations at the medical center ranging from ensuring compliance with all regulatory and accrediting activities to overseeing major clinical programs including laboratory sciences, radiology, the cancer center, organ and transplantation programs, and pharmaceutical services. He also has more than 20 years of teaching in the School of Public Health as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa’s Graduate Program in Health Management and Policy.
Shane joined Beaumont Health System in 2008 and one year later was appointed as President of Beaumont Royal Oak, the health system’s 1,100-bed flagship teaching hospital and quaternary referral center. As President, Shane worked with a team of physician leaders and executives who pursued and achieved national recognition for top decile performance in care quality and efficiency. Beaumont was consistently recognized for its dominant brand in Michigan as the region’s most preferred hospital and achieved national recognition from US News and World Report in 9 clinical specialties. The hospital was consistently recognized by Vizient as a national leader and was honored to receive the Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award — an honor given annually to comprehensive academic medical centers, large, specialized complex care medical centers, complex care medical centers and community-based medical centers that demonstrate superior performance.
In 2016, Shane formed Health Market Solutions and created the organization’s Operating Model based on the methodologies used to achieve success at Beaumont and the University of Iowa. The HMS Operating Model emphasizes:
- Establishing a clear focus on a limited set of goals to achieve rapid performance improvement
- Engaging a team of physicians and other leaders through an internal governance model and improves and accelerates decision-making
- Leveraging ideas coming from all areas of the organization by designing a system in which all staff and volunteers can recommend initiatives to drive success for the leadership team to approve and implement
- Implementing a new approach for executive decision-making that leverages a written executive brief structure to alter the structure of leadership meetings and ensure that multiple decisions are made every time the executive team comes together.
This resulting operating philosophy has since proven successful in various environments. It has been used to rapidly restore financial performance in failing organizations and to reinvigorate care quality and patient safety programs in both major academic centers in urban markets and community hospitals.
Shane has a bachelor’s degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University and a master’s in health administration from the University of Iowa.
